EP Review: Cattle and Cane – Cattle and Cane
Cattle and Cane
Released on 16th October 2011
You might be forgiven for thinking that EP has a song thrown in that is by someone else. It’s not. Whilst the first song Waiting is actually my favourite track for the female lead vocal, the Cattle and Cane EP actually is predominantly a duet lead affair. The thing is that I really love the female vocal and the male vocal in equal measures and kind of wish they had two songs each. The Poacher is a reallllly really cool track though. It makes me think of an odd combination of other bands, Bon Jovi (yes really), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and kind of Noel Gallagher too (if only for the very shorted amount of time). The EP is great in that it covers quite a nice range of tones, sounds and paces whilst steel feeling as though it all belongs together. We Were Children is such a sad song though and whilst it’s beautiful too it is a little depressing, but it’s the simplicity in the harmonies that just makes it demand your attention. They work so well together with only acoustic guitar to accompany them.
The final track on this EP is Sail Home and kind of echoes the sounds and techniques used on We Were Children. Whilst I like this track it’s a little bit too slow to really keep my attention for much of the time. I wouldn’t say it’s dreary but it’s getting a little bit too close to that description for my liking. Over all I would have to say that Waiting and The Poacher are by far my preferred tracks on this Cattle and Cane EP and their sounds are so far apart that they almost don’t even sound like the same band at all. Perhaps that’s why I love it so much. I want to hear more and more that’s all I know. Great stuff.
