EP Review: There’s Talk – Tiny Strands

Tiny Strands

theres talk tiny sparksReleased August 6th 2013

There is always room in my life for music that is  really stripped back and emotive and There’s Talk really deliver on both of these aspects with their Tiny Strands EP. When I say stripped back I don’t mean that there’s nothing of interest, far from it, in this case there are many moments that really make me pay attention. After all this is sometimes music that can easily find you otherwise distracted; it doesn’t have a beat or a hook that captures you right off the bat. It’s a wallowing kind of EP, they wallow, I wallow, we all wallow together. A little bit like group therapy, and let’s face it everyone could use a little of that now and then.

Hummingbird Place has a wonderful tenderness about it with a touch of the industrial about it with the electronic sound toward the end. The juxtaposition of the two brings that interest, least I mention that these vocals are just breathtaking and the production allowing them to stay close and breathy is just the ticket.

Title Track Tiny Strands, has a real country ballad feel to it. The twang of the guitar the style of the song, those hummed notes. It sounds like it’s being played out on a record player even though it’s an MP3 and I cannot tell bands how much I love it when they drop this technique. There’s then a gospel element that swings on by, layered harmonies over the guitar creating something all together quite haunting.

With the beautiful mix of feather like softness of vocal and dreamy electronica on lead single The Salt you know almost straight away that there is something going on here that is special. The lyrics and the extreme closeness of the vocal is the thing that does it for me, and listen out for that last breath at the end. Spine tingling good.

Ok so it’s not going to be suitable for every occasion but sometimes you do need something to take you away from the crazy, or the dancy, the deliriously happy and give you a little time away. After all it’s only an EP it’s not asking for all that long, just give yourself a listen and some “me time”.
