Live Review: Saint Raymond
Saint Raymond
Koko, Camden. Friday 31st February 2014
It was a quarter to midnight and the queue was still right the way down the side of Koko in Camden with people pushing and shoving eager to make it inside to catch Saint Raymond. It was also very cold and wet but still they, and I, had ventured out to catch one of the hottest new acts around.
Those inside were already in for a treat though with the musical delights that were presented to us by Brighton based, female fronted, band Iyes. A strong stage presence despite a somewhat demanding crowd they seemed to enjoy every moment of their show and so did I. I did only see the latter half of it though it has to be said. Certainly a band I will want to go and see again.
Although the show wasn’t a pre-sale Sold Out show I’m fairly certain the place must have been hitting on full capacity by the time Saint Raymond took to the stage. Straight into their special blend of indie the crowd were instantly there with them, even if they didn’t know all the words or indeed ever heard the song before, people were clambering a top of each other to wave their arms around (always a testament of a good band and a good night out). As with most new bands and club night gigs the set felt on the short side. That also might have been because I was thoroughly enjoying it.
Recent single Young Blood obviously caught the crowd’s attention the most and it was good to witness the sing along which ensued. I think that this year’s festival experiences for Saint Raymond and those watching will be an altogether different experience to the quiet tiny ones of 2013 when they weren’t quite on the lips of every gig goer around.
If you get a chance to see these guys play then do it. I’ve seen them both full band and acoustic and I have to say that full on band is my preference but I’m sure as I get to know more songs I will grow to love the show no matter how it’s delivered.
