EP Review: Jungle Doctors – Open Up
Open Up
Released on April 20th
I’ve been waiting for this for ages, the best part of 8 months or so, so to finally see the first EP from Jungle Doctors land in my Inbox made me throw everything aside and put it on. It’s hard to listen to this as a fresh release as I’m very familiar with two of the three tracks but despite that I still feel energised and excited when I hear it.
If you’ve been waiting for that new perfect indie band to follow on from the likes of Two Door Cinema Club then Jungle Doctors could just be the answer to your prayers. It’s been a long while since I’ve found a band of that ilk to really make me excited. They have already released Dry as a free download and it has everything you want it to; a clap along, a sing along and melody that has sunshine serendipitously stitched into it.
If it’s a dance you want well then shoot for the stars. I can throw all kinds of weird and wonderful shapes when listening to the Open Up EP. I think my best shapes are those done while listening to Falling. I love the slightly scuzzy sounds of electronica that sit just underneath the guitars. I have the feeling that the chorus is going to resonate with hoards of people too which is never a bad thing. Though the story is of mixed emotions overall it lifts you. These guys know how to create something that has peaks of interest musically and their choruses are just built perfectly for the craziest of live shows.
There’s nothing overly complex going on here; Jungle Doctors aren’t trying to sound clever or speak to you about political issues, and there’s only a smattering of social commentary. Yet people forget how difficult it is to pull together one song that works without trying too hard, let alone three in one go. This is pure indie pop at its very best. I predicted big things for these guys the first time I heard them and it got even more exciting when I saw them play. Now hearing this I’m in no doubt that they are going to win people over in their droves.
