EP Review: Little May – Little May

Little May

little may little may epReleased 12th October 2014

With lead single Dust sounding as soft, fine and layered as its namesake , Little May go on to pull together a collection of songs on their EP that gently flutter and gather momentum. There’s such a sweetness and an innocence in the sound at the begging of Midnight Hour that you really feel the difference as the track progresses. The bass becomes just a tad harsher and the vocals so much stronger. It’s a track that comes of age right in front of you. For me this is the key track on the EP and it’s perfectly placed, smack bang in the middle.

All innocence is lost when you come along to Bones. There’s somewhat of a sexual slur to the vocal but they never quite leave that sweetened sound behind them. There’s a grittier sound here too with synths but it’s the layers of vocals and guitars that make this song feel complete. I am willing to bet this track has great energy when played live.

There is an undeniable, if not a cheap, comparison to be made with First Aid Kit, who also have this magical combination of subtle sweet and sour vocals. Though perhaps Little May bring a little more of a country feel at times.  Listening to this EP has hardly been a chore, it’s brought a little light to my otherwise gloomy evening and cleverly constructed it is for a first EP. I look forward to hearing many more.
