Live Review: The Charlatans – London
The Charlatans
Monday 20th October, The Garage, London
Words: @stu_evans
There was a moment at tonight’s show where I decided to watch the audience reaction to what Tim Burgess described as ‘A new song for you’
Now normally a new song indicates a number of people heading to the bar (some call these fair weather fans, I make no such judgement) but tonight not one person moved. In fact around me not one person spoke. They listened, they enjoyed and more importantly, respected the artists in front of them.
The Charlatans are a band that survived Baggy, Britpop and Simon Cowell. Tonight was a promotional push for their next single (The oh so beautiful, er, So Oh) and the following album scheduled to drop in January.
Opening with mid 90’s classics ..Thinkin Things Over & North Country Boy the band were into their stride immediately. My friends and I would look at each other with glad recognition for each song, the band reminding us just how bloody good they are.
The set had a nice mix of old (Weirdo, Toothache (my favourite song of theirs as it happens)Just Lookin’, Impossible) and new (Talking In Tones and Trouble Understanding) all of which flowed superbly.
Rich keyboard sounds from Tony Rogers blending beautifully with some serious bass reverberated around the room, soaring vocals accompanying them (I still think Tim Burgess’ voice is underrated)
We were left with the double punch of How High and, the as per predicted, but by no means any less enjoyable, Sproston Green – eight minutes of a pure wall of sound par excellence.
The Charlatans are here to stay, and might just own 2015. Stay tuned…..
