EP Review: Two Cartoons – Lost Boys Club
Lost Boys Club
Words: Gary Feeney
Hailing from Dunedin, New Zealand, Two Cartoons have released two E.Ps in their homeland and now, following a move to London last year, the duo find themselves ready to begin their assault on the British music scene with their new E.P., Lost Boys Club.
The tone of the E.P. is set from the opening, eponymous track which boasts an instantly catchy, bright melody that befits a spring-time release, culminating in a rousing chorus which urges the listener to “come alive in the Lost Boys Club”. The up-beat tempo carries on in to the irresistible Dirty Harry, which deserves to be a hit in indie-discos – think Arctic Monkeys crossed with Franz Ferdinand’s at their poppiest and you’ll be in the right ballpark – with some witty, playful lyrics adding to the sunny nature of the music, such as the chorus proclaiming “she’s more Dirty Harry than Love Actually”.
Horizon Approaching is another song intended for dance-floors, but unlike the previous tracks it is propelled along more by the powerful rhythm section than the guitar and vocal melodies; from the four tracks on offer, you get the feeling this would be the stand-out of a Two Cartoons live show.
The tempo is slowed down for closing track Getting Green, but Two Cartoons’ obvious knack for a catchy pop song is still on show with a melody that is likely to still be stuck in your head for sometime after you finish listening to it. It’s often the case that when a band goes for a slower song to close a release, you’re left feeling that it is something of an anti-climax but there’s no such feeling here: arguably, this is the most impressive track on the E.P.
From start to finish, Lost Boys Club is simply a fun record to listen to, full of instantly engaging tracks featuring danceable verses and uplifting choruses – if Two Cartoons can keep up this standard, they should be reaping the rewards of their decision to move half-way across the world sooner rather than later.
