ALBUM REVIEW: Indoor Pets – Pathetic Apathetic

Words: Amy Butcher

Today is the day! After a hiatus, Indoor Pets are officially back with their sophomore album, Pathetic Apathetic and it’s a darker, grunge-led 36 minutes of absolutely stellar music.

Since the release of their album Be Content, which was a high intensity pop rock debut, Indoor Pets have had a four year break to really hone their craft, pour passion into their music and in the latest offering it really shows where they are as a band. With their return including sold out London & Manchester shows earlier this year, a killer single in London (Love To Hate) and a loud, honest next phase in Pathetic Apathetic where they’re anything but content – this is the start of something truly exciting for Jamie Glass, James Simpson, Rob Simpson & Oliver Nunn.

If I could put Pathetic Apathetic’s overall sound into a few words, it would be: pure angst. A display of raw feelings, fleshed out into gutsy, loud and punchy sounds with honest, witty remarks sung along by singer Jamie. Whether it’s the pent up frustration of living in a city that has so much to offer to musicians yet fails to support them in London (Love To Hate) or the overwhelming rollercoaster it is to fancy someone in Dopamine Girls, Indoor Pets have given us an authentic sophomore album.

One track that really sticks out to me is towards the end of the record, Spinal Tap. Now for those who do not know, this name is shared with a fictional band, known for their hilarious mockumentary, very loud sound and iconic line ‘These go up to 11’. With most of the tracks across Pathetic Apathetic, they are exactly that – hard hitting, gritty and something you wish you could turn up to 11. Yet with the song that’s named after this, as a listener you’re given quite the opposite; major synth, ethereal melodies and a soft pause between what is a contrastingly harsh album.

Pathetic Apathetic is a fantastic blend of 90s grunge akin to Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails & Weezer melded into sweet soulful vocals. This creates an album and sound that is original yet all too familiar. Get your ears around it now, it’s not one to miss!
