We’ll Be Ghosts
Out Now
Words: Julia Grantham
This stunning debut single from Brooke Bentham, a singer/songwriter from South Shields, is a beautiful song. Not just another female artist trying to make her way in the music world, this stops you in your tracks, makes you listen and leaves you wanting more. Her voice is both hopeful, wistful and yet is delivered simultaneously .with a sense of resignation and acceptance. It is difficult to believe that Brooke will not become a huge success. At times her style is not dissimilar to Florence and The Machine or Amy Macdonald, however, Brooke still has her own unique and beautifully haunting sound. This is female folk pop at its best; contemporary, fresh and melodic, original, yet simple. Perhaps her not-so-secret weapon, is just that: the beauty of her simplicity.
We’ll Be Ghosts is musically led by the soft sound of an electric guitar. It has nowhere to hide, musically, using mainly just the one instrument. However, this only serves to draw you in, enhancing the vocals which are poignant throughout. Her voice makes clever of crescendo and diminuendo; bringing our attention to the lyrics and message of the song. It tells the tale of someone trying to mend a broken heart, declaring an undying love; determined to find a resolution. Both rich in melody and emotion, I predict great things for this up-and-coming artist and can’t wait to hear more. Watch this space.
