Single Review: Born Blonde – Solar

Solar

Released 11th July 2011

Sometimes there are songs that you hear and you think ooooh now I like this but… what on earth is that they’re singing about? Solar has to be one of those songs. For the life of me I can only just about hear the track’s title and I have given it quite a few listens. I’m not sure if Born Blonde are trying to create music that is like one of those fuzzy pictures; the ones where you have to stare at it in a certain strange pain inducing way until you finally see the picture. If they are then they certainly seem to have done it well. I can’t stop listening to it and it’s not just to work out what they’re saying but the melody has me totally hooked too.

Solar brings together elements that are really reminiscent of early day Britopop bands. Don’t go thinking that I’m crazy because I’m not. If you listen to the sounds of early Verve, Doves, Ride and even some of the Beta Band you’ll see exactly what I mean. It goes without saying that they also have a sound  in this track that is not too dissimilar to the likes of Jesus and Mary Chain and to some degree My Bloody Valentine. If Briptpop is going to make a comeback any time in the near future it’s certainly looking like we’re hitting the right kinds of sounds with some of the emerging bands of recent months and Born Blonde are seemingly sounding like they’re fitting the bill. They even have a very early 90s vibe video, something the Stone Roses would have been proud of.
