Single Review: The Rifles – Tangled Up In Love

Tangled Up In Love

Released 25th September 2011

The Rifles are one of those kinds of bands that you associate with Topman clad indie kids having a leap around and getting sweaty. You might think of their old singles Peace And Quiet or She’s Got Standards. Songs full of angular spitting, cockney style vocals, very early Paul Weller. You know exactly what I mean, don’t you? So you can imagine my shock when I pressed play on this, The Rifles’ new single. It’s not the first time that they’ve ever written a beautiful or sentimental track (Spend A Lifetime for one is a pretty ditty), but this, oh this is much more.

I wonder if you, like me, pressed play on the soundcloud below and thought someone had uploaded the wrong track? Who knew The Rifles could actually sing like this? Properly sing! This is a proper pop song in every way. Though they might want to kill me for saying so, it sounds like something from a Rom Com, I think that’s a pretty decent thing to say, but then I’m not a Topman/Fred Perry wearing kind of person. This isn’t to say that I wasn’t a fan before, I was, right from the start, but this new direction really shows a new side to the band. It shows a certain maturity, after all it takes a lot to let go of a sound you’ve worked so hard to make and keep. I’m actually quite taken a back by it because I love it. The strings, the melody, the lyrics and mostly the singing. How exactly this will fit into their hectic live set I’m not sure but my head is a little bit blown by this new sound. I am still questioning if it is indeed the right track uploaded onto the Soundcloud. I know it is really and well, for once, I’m almost, but not quite, lost for words.
