Hands Down

Dog Is Dead are heading out on tour with Bombay Bicycle Club and listening to this single (a lot) makes you realise why they were the perfect choice. This reminds me of old B.B.C, think tracks such as The Hill and I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose. I’m not saying that Dog Is Dead are ripping them off, but it’s a sound that has been much loved for quite some time and what I love about this is that despite it not being original in sound (harmonies/guitar swirls and thrashings all been done 100 times and more), this still manages to sound fresh.

It’s a track that makes you want to pay attention to the lyrics, often you find that songs pass you by, you know the words and you sing along aimlessly not really thinking or feeling much of anything. The lyrics here are well written and have a purpose, they tell a tale and so often in pop music today the tale is more of an idea of one than a fully formed concept. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, we all need a bit of mindless fun from our music, but take note, singles can be both catchy as hell, fun and still have something a little interesting. As far as fun goes, there’s plenty of this here too, the chorus is crushingly catchy and musically there’s so much here to make you dance and wave your arms about. Who could ask for more?
