Single Review: Lana Del Ray – Born To Die

Born To Die

Released January 23rd

You have potentially been hiding under a rock if you haven’t heard or at least heard of Lana Del Ray. You have probably heard her even if you don’t think you have. Her debut single, Video Games, has been widely used and has had over 8million hits on YouTube since Lana posted it in July of last year. Lana kicks off 2012 with not only a new single, Born To Die, but also releases her debut album of the same name on January 30th.

There has been a marked change in the style of female vocalists that are getting attention over the last few years or so. The pop vocal has taken a bit of a back step and an almost more traditional vocal has started to make it’s way back into the world of popular music. Lana is a perfect example of this. I’m not saying that this style of vocal had ever stopped or that people didn’t like it, but for a long time it just wasn’t what was fashionable. You could try and lump Lana Del Ray in with a whole heap of female vocalists from Bat For Lashes, Sia, Florence and even Paloma Faith. These are all singers who have an ability to bring a deep sense of drama to their music both vocally and in terms of their story telling.

Born To Die, is a dark affair, following on perfectly from the murky feel of Video Games, there’s just something so impossibly catchy about this track. I think it’s the sense of intrigue, the story telling and the vocal; it really grabs your attention and holds it, listen after listen. I’m getting a real sense that this is going to be a huge year for Lana Del Ray and I can’t wait to hear the whole album.
