Single Review: Nerina Pallot – All Bets Are Off
All Bets Are Off
Released 30th January 2012
It could be said that Nerina had her fair share of critical acclaim last year, only that doesn’t quite ring true. Whist those in the know, knew, others seemed to have not quite caught on to the wonderfulness that is Nerina Pallot’s vocal. All Bets Are Off, is taken from Nerina’s debut album, Year Of The Wolf, and displays her sweeter than sweet vocal, coupled with the bitterness of regret and failed love from the lyrics. The instrumentation is classic for this style of singer songwriter and whilst it doesn’t push the boundaries in any way, it is still so complimentary to the vocal and the story.
Narina is slowly but surely proving herself a worthy artist in her own right, no longer just providing songs for other people (she is one of the most in demand songwriters in Britain). Whilst you can hear the strength of the songwriting and that there is no doubt this little lady can sing, there is something almost too sweet sounding for this track’s theme. I feel like it needs something a little bit darker because it feels quite uplifting considering the subject matter. The strings help give it some drama but in an all too sweet a way. Still though, if that’s all I can find to complain about she can’t be doing too badly.
