Shoot Me Down (The Remix EP)

It’s not often that we review an EP of remixes of the same song yet this one has made us make an exception because, well quite frankly, it’s flipping awesome. Sweden’s Johan Reinhold has created a wonderful track in it’s own right. Shoot Me Down captures an Eric Clapton-esque guitar introand takes it in a totally different direction with the rest of the song. It took exactly one listen to fall for this song. In fact even that’s a slight stretch of the truth, I was already getting fully involved half way through. I don’t want it to end and the fact that it’s so well produced also is really quite important. It feels well cared for rather than over baked in the studio. The instrumentation is equally intricate in parts as it is simple and sparse in other places. The vocal is strong and gives a firm punch to the lyrics, which are well written and are one of the most important aspects of what makes this track as good as it is.

I don’t want to focus too much on the remixes because they are just a little bonus really; an excuse to keep listening. The good thing about these remixes is that they all manage to keep a lot of the original track. This might sound obvious to you but there have been so many re-mixes that have distorted the original to beyond recognition that it’s ridiculous. Take a listen here to The Kill Van Kulls full on electro remix and you’ll see a great example of how it can be done properly (imo). It’s heavy, it’s harsh and still the vocals and the track fit it perfectly. It doesn’t take it and totally screw it up and spit it out. Owsey’s remix is a lot softer, giving the track a more dream like state and although it does build up to a quicker pace it never takes you to oblivion quite like the others. The FRANKYNSTYN remix is possibly my least favourite perhaps because it reminds me of some kind of hellish spinning class. Basically the original Shoot Me Down gets Popped’s first prize all in all and the remixes, well it’s 2nd and 3rd prize both to The Kill Van Kulls on this one.
