Single Review: The Subways – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Released on 7th May 2012

There are a few bands that I can lump in with each other at the moment who have singles out right now and there is definitely a hierarchy of my favourite within them. At the top of the heap would be Band Of Skulls followed by Blood Red Shoes and at the bottom of the short but firm heap would be The Subways. They’re not a terrible band, in fact I have, at times, really enjoyed them and they do put on a good show. The problem is is that there is something incredibly childish in their music. Childish isn’t always bad, but they look to be coming across with a bit more attitude and a harder edge; blue hair, heavy make up, big bass guitar being flung about the place.

This single is catchy, which is fair enough, but the vocals are lacklustre and void of any real punch. A track like this needs more edge, more interest to pick it up. It’s fine if you’re looking for middle of the road indie punk but when there are more interesting noises coming from elsewhere you really can sort the wheat from the chaff. There are points at which the vocal kinda gets its right, and the production I blame for the overly smooth finish to the instrumentation.  The female vocal sweetens the song a little too much for my taste though and ugh, I kind of want to like it but equally, I kind of don’t.
