Single Review: The Robbie Boyd Band – I Won’t Let You Go
I Won’t Let You Go
Released April 23rd 2012
The first time I heard this I wasn’t sure what I thought, at times during that first listen I thought, oohh that bit’s nice, ooh and that bit too, and also, hmm not sure, not sure… oooh but then that bit. This, for me, is a good thing. I’ll tell you why; it means I hit the repeat button, a fair amount of times at that. If I didn’t hear something interesting enough in the track I will admit that I wouldn’t have done that and skipped on to the next thing in my list.
I seem to have really fallen in love with the singer songwriter folky side of music over the last three years or so, something that 10 years ago or so I wouldn’t ever have thought possible, but there’s such a charm to it and The Robbie Boyd Band have this charm in spades. The most interesting part of this track to my ear is when the backing vocal comes in and adds that dimension of harmony that brings a huge amount of light to the track.
It’s quite a simple little ditty in many ways, the tale is one I’ve heard many times and whilst the lyrics here might not quite match up to others sometimes simple is better, the whole less is more sort of thing. Another thing I’ve noted is that it sounds quite a happy song, quite upbeat in spite of the sentiment and I really like that.
