Single Review: Beth Orton – Magpie

Magpie

Released 1st October 2012

Beth Orton has been a singer songwriter that has popped in and out of my music conciousness for a very long time. She has always stood on solid musical footing and Magpie sees her back on my radar and back on my list of “loved” singer song writers that I’m ashamed to say I should support more but for whatever nondescript reason I haven’t.

With a very distinctive vocal that must surely be an inspiration for many it will be interesting to see how Beth fares with her latest return. This track builds beautifully from it’s sparse and open start into a rich tapestry of sounds as the story builds. There’s a lovely section toward the end that brings in self harmonies layered up and the contrast between the earthy rich vocal and the delicate wind sounds from the flute are lovely. I must say, I’m really going to make more of an effort to support Beth Orton because I have been foolish in the past, I wonder if there’s anyone out there who will join me.
