Single Review: Folks – My Mother

My Mother

My MotherReleased 3rd February 2013

The Black Keys have done a lot for bringing rock n roll back into the public ‘s conciousness over the last year and a bit despite having been around for a very long time, (the power of sync deals huh) and Folks have a similar vibe yet here in My Mother they lack anything other than a banal covers band sound. Even the repetitive riffs and the bandy bass should have this track engrained into my mind after so many listens but as much as I feel I should really like it, I just don’t.

It is a grower I’ll give it that but I really feel that no amount of listens will have me fall in love; I’d rather listen to the aforementioned Black Keys or something a bit more grittier from someone like The Black Lips. I really had high hopes for Folks, their single Avalanche in 2011 had something really interesting to it but this is just a little too copy cat for me, for today at least. I’d say this much though, I’d like  to hear it live. I hope it would have the missing grit that could really bring it alive for me, the video kind of suggests it might.
