EP Review: Lloyd Yates – Bring Back The Life
Bring Back The Life
Released 19th of August 2013
The lead and title single Bring Back The Life is already getting plenty of attention, and rightfully so. Lloyd Yates has a really distinctive vocal and this track has been built upon the foundations of that to become something instantly recognisable and very enjoyable.
The rest of the EP really demonstrates how versatile a sound Lloyd Yates can create, from the first funk percussion induced opening track to the follow on folk laden passion of Down By The River. I feel quite excited when I listen to this EP because I fail to see or understand how this cannot be the start of something very big for Lloyd Yates, something not too far off from Ben Howard and the likes. There’s something a little bit David Gray about him too though, not so much the vocal and not at all the style, maybe the lyrics? the song structure? well maybe just a tiny hint of the warble to the vocal, but totally different texture and feel. It shouldn’t be seen as an insult that comment by the way, David Gray has had a very successful career.
The final track Sunday Man begins as a really stripped back vocal and guitars. There’s a sorrow in this track that is really felt from the emotive vocal and the sadness that’s captured in the electric guitar swirls that punctuate the song. The lyrics might shout out for hope and want but the music certainly suggests there’s something else behind the wish.
