Anyone who has been to see Hatcham Social play in the last year or so will have seen them end their live sets with this previously unreleased track and know just how frustrated I have been having to wait so long for its release. Lion With A Lazer Gun has all the hallmarks of a classic Hatcham Social track; a sweet and catchy melody, trippy drums and a hazy vintage feel to the production. The addition of violin just gives this an extra dimension and is a real treat for the ears.
While you might all think I’m bonkers there is something about the beginning of this track that (for me) has something of the Arctic Monkeys/Last Of The Shadow Puppets about it. It is no bad thing though – the dreamy effortless vocal on this is sublime. While the live version certainly has more a more powerful energy to it (especially the drums) there is nothing lost here and it just melts into a dream world. I am happy to say it has been more than worth the wait. Now bring on the new album!
