Just Watch: The Bay Rays – Aphelion
The Bay Rays
Words: Gary Hughes
Even though it helps me to make sense of what I am listening to, I’m trying to keep other bands out of my reviews. If you see any, feel free to call me out on it*
Aphelion is from the trio The Bay Rays, hailing from the Garden of England, Kent. It is the lead single from their upcoming EP, called Satisfaction. There is a lot to like with this band.
I hear big, driving rhythms in this song. Growly bass guitar and quality drums pushing the song forward into a chorus that opens up with a satisfying falsetto vocal. Subject wise, this is a song about wanting something that is just out of reach. Unrequited love, lust, whatever. And the music plays closely to this lyrical urgency. Everything you want but can’t have is urgent, big and unsettling. That’s how I hear this song.
*the growly bass reminds me of the same thing in Crying Lightening by the Arctic Monkeys, the song itself reminds me more of Muse than anything else I have heard and their name is a Dead Kennedy’s reference. Sorry, I caved. three other bands in one sentence.
