Just Watch: Honeyblood – Walking At Midnight
Honeyblood
Words: Julia Grantham
Honeyblood are a very impressive female duo from Glasgow, Scotland. Having been together just five years, and taking time out to study, these women have toured with none other than Courtney Barnett and Foo Fighters. Of the name of their band they are quoted as saying: “Honeyblood is a mixture of water, honey, cornflour and red food dye”. I immediately thought of the cult classic film Carrie and when I watched this here video? The girl in the first frame was spookily similar to the dead-behind-the-eyes character in this much loved but feared film by Stephen King. The video is very powerful: a perfect blend of 70s style horror, 90s Tarantino but with a contemporary take on the hypnotic female lead on stage. Stylisation from past eras is used, but the effect is fresh, with a clean and crisp cinematography. The camera captures close ups of unmistakeably modern day characters, all the while portraying the essence of how powerful a woman can be on stage.
The mood is dark, ominous yet unknown. The title line Walking At Midnight is repeated many times throughout and seems to point towards womens’ vulnerability. There’s definitely some feminist undercurrents here, I just love it. Very melodic, and the kind of song that’s best listened to wearing heels and showcasing your moves, whether or not you’re a boy or girl!
