Yonaka
Released 6th October 2017
Words: Lauren Grigor
An EP at this point of a band’s career should be a showcase of their strengths and give us an idea of their trajectory. The 5 tracks on YONAKA’s latest EP Heavy do just that. Featuring one of their earliest releases Run re-mastered with clearer vocals and tighter hooks.
Opening track Bubblegum kicks us in the teeth with a raucous, lustful chorus and Theresa’s dynamic vocal ability and the iconic YONAKA drumbeat. It’s an instant earworm
All in my head is probably the most stripped down track, allowing each element to come through before the crescendo, allowing the desperate, emotive lyrics to pack more of a punch.
Gods and Lovers is quintessential YONAKA. With a pop feel on the drumming, funky bass line, guitar fuzz and their, lyric-heavy, dark vocals. It’s another absolute banger guaranteed to get you a cheery elbow to the face if you dare to try to get to the front at one of their gigs.
YONAKA have a knack for filling every song with a story, it makes every track feel succinct, unique and high in energy. I’m a sucker for a closing track, Heavy is hazy, super sexy and builds up to something that could have even the most reserved listeners writhing around on their bed wanting more.
If this is the direction that this powerhouse is going, then please take me along for the ride. With its vocal layering, dreamy production that has a Tarantino feel and elements of Bjork in Theresa’s singing, this is a band that refuses to back down.
Heavy is the track I’ve had on repeat more than any and I highly suggest you do the same.
If you haven’t seen the raw power of YONAKA yet then get on to it and buy tickets for their UK tour – like NOW!
