May is easily shaping up to be THE month for music fans. With an abundance of music festivals happening across the UK, it’s difficult to choose which to attend. But Hit The North absolutely has to be on your list. Taking place across multiple venues in Newcastle, this day-long festival has an awesome bill headed up by Jake Bugg and Tom Grennan, as well as some of my favourite up and coming artists. As always at Popped, we’re here to be your guardian angels and let you know who you have to see if you’re heading up to Newcastle on bank holiday Sunday.
ONES TO WATCH
FEVA
I’ve made it no secret that I’m a huge fan of FEVA and having not seen them for a little while, I cannot wait to catch what’s sure to be a high-energy set at HTN. If you’re a fan of raucous indie-rock embellished with screeching bass lines and crashing percussions, you won’t want to miss this Newcastle outfit.

Sophie and the Giants
This Sheffield four-piece are a relatively new one to me but they are definitely on my list to catch live. Frontwoman Sophie Scott’s powerful vocals are reminiscent of Florence Welch and their nostalgic pop is infectious. They also play The Boiler Shop stage which is an awesome venue, very excited for this one.

Swimming Tapes
Chilled out indie-pop is on the agenda if you mosey on over to Underground to catch Swimming Tapes and I highly recommend you do. Tracks such as Queen’s Parade and Cameos are so catchy that they’ve already racked up millions of Spotify plays and I can guarantee you’ll be singing along after the first listen.

Spielbergs
The majority of the acts we cover here at Popped are UK-based but when a band as good as Spielbergs is heading over to this end of the pond, you have to make sure you catch them. The Norwegian trio combine a style of chaotic rock into fuzzier indie-pop that is, at times, incredibly similar to The Wombats which is ALWAYS a good thing.

LION
Powerful vocals and raucous instrumentals aplenty, LION is for those looking for something a bit rockier. A gorgeous voice and soundscapes oozing with attitude, I was instantly hooked when I first listened to LION and I reckon she’s going to get lots of love from her sets at festivals this summer. Catch her in those smaller venues whilst you can!

Another Sky
I caught Another Sky supporting LAUREL a little while ago now and I’m so excited to see them again, especially following the release of latest single The Cracks. I can’t get enough of Catrin Vincent’s unique voice and the outfit’s anthemic melodies sound just as good live as they do recorded. The 2019 answer to London Grammar, I guarantee you’ll fall in love with this lot.
