Festival Preview: Highest Point, Lancaster
Highest Point Festival
Williamson Park, Lancaster 17-18 May 2019
Words: Gary Lambert
Highest Point Festival is a relatively new addition to the north-west summer taking place in Lancaster at Williamson Park. Obviously, on a far smaller scale, the festival seems to be using Glastonbury as a role model with the event mixing a variety of genres, having up-and-coming acts alongside legends, as well as mixing singalong crowd pleasers with artistic happenings, and high-quality dance music. It is the Chris Glaba Memorial stage which will host BBC Introducing headlined by Cabbage and Anna Calvi which is most exciting for Popped Music.
Ones to Watch
King Nun – Chris Glaba Memorial Stage Friday
Signed to Dirty Hit, King Nun are one of the most enthralling live acts around right now. I’ll admit though seeing them in the daylight might be a strange experience because they are most definitely a band designed for dark basements or moody nights. A perfect blend of punk power and indie song structure they will have something for most. I’d hate to be in the band that has to follow them.

Lucy Spraggan – Main Stage Friday
Now a former X Factor candidate would not be my usual choice for a recommendation, but I like to go on the basis of acts that I have seen perform impressively recently. And no matter how high I put up my musical prejudices, I can’t stop myself from suggesting that you give her a whirl after watching her set at Liverpool’s Arts Club a few weeks ago. With her acoustic guitar, heartfelt lyrics, and a smile that will lift anybody, she is perfect for a family-friendly festival.

Amber Suns – Chris Glaba Memorial Stage Saturday
Opening up the fun and games on Saturday is local act Amber Suns. If you can be guaranteed one thing over the festival, it is that this band will throw everything they have at this slot. It will be worth getting up early for, and you might just be surprised by the quality of their tunes. It will definitely set you up nicely for whatever lies ahead.

Stealing Sheep – Main Stage Saturday
I have a belief that no matter what is on a bill, Stealing Sheep will always be the best thing on it. They are one of the most incredible acts I have ever seen, and to be honest I wish I hadn’t recommended them because it is so difficult to describe them. All I will say is that the hour Stealing Sheep will be on stage should be counted as a piece of art rather than a set at a festival.

Ovvls – Chris Glaba Memorial Stage Saturday
Imagine if Pet Shop Boys were goths as teenagers and still went on to form a brilliant electronic duo. Well that is Ovvls! Dark, brooding and moody for sure, but they have been in demand a lot during 2019 and that is going to continue after you watch them. They have also put a lot of work into their live set too so that they’re a welcoming proposition for all.
