Single Review – All We Are – I Wear You

I Wear You

all we are i wear youReleased 3rd November 2014

Words: Julia Grantham

The members that make up this trio that is All We Are, come from Ireland, Norway and Brazil and this song is as rich in sound as it is diverse in the nationalities of its songwriters. It is cool, breezy and poignant, yet catchy and immediately accessible at the same time.

I wear you is reminiscent of The Bee Gees, vocally, and yet with all the contemporary harmony of Alt-J at times as well. Add to the harmony some 70s-style disco backing vocals, and the sound is an intriguing layering of style, substance and genre. Musically, in parts, this song pays tribute to bands such as The Police but with all the style and substance of disco. You could go as far as to say it might be mistaken for MGMT writing on a lazy Sunday morning.

The overall feel of this track is catchy, yet relaxed. You could dance to it in the sunshine; an icy-cool drink in hand, or drive through the country with it playing in your car. It definitely oozes a summer vibe and yet the song itself has a poignant, bitter-sweet undertone. The lyrics “I wear you” can be interpreted in many different ways; perhaps someone not being able to rid themselves of a person they are infatuated with, yet when juxtaposed with the line “this is all we had” it suggests a tale of unrequited love. The energetic and subtle, yet abrupt ending indicates someone coming to terms with the end of a relationship, real or imagined.  That is the beauty of this song; it has something for everyone. Let the music take a hold of you; its a cool, understated disco vibe that can be appreciated for just that, or play it to get over someone and engage in the bittersweet story suggested by its lyrics.
