Single Review: Jim Valentine – Make You Mine

Make You Mine

jim valentineReleased November 2014

I have a feeling new band Jim Valentine might be a bit of a Marmite band, if people actually don’t get too confused that the band is not just a singer, at least Jim tells me they’re a band though only sends a picture of himself. Confusing but I digress.

The vocals are what is going to do it, the Marmite thing I mean. Personally I hate Marmite but I love Jim Valentine. How to even describe that vocal though? It’s a high pitched nasal whine of sorts and it hits you straight away in this track. I love the juxtaposition against the grit of the guitar and the dirty scuzzy bass. It’s a rip roar of a track that starts like a spider building it’s web; slowly and methodically, before totally trapping its prey and devouring it. The prey in their sights is us and I’ve already fallen captive. I just hope they don’t totally eat me alive.

Make You Mine has something of a T-Rex feel to it in parts, call me crazy, and other times it gives Kasabian a run for their money. I’ll always come back to the vocal though. It might be marmite but it’s distinctive as hell. This band are showing so much promise, Marmite or not. Just imagine your debut track is as good as this one, has as much arrogance and attitude as this one…. scary huh? I see big things for this band based on this one track alone.
