festevol posterArguably  of the highlights of the Liverpool Music Calendar is the musical mayhem of Festevol. A music festival put together by well established Liverpool promoter Evol. This year it’s a day long event taking place on the May 1st Bank Holiday Sunday and running into the early hours of Monday morning. Check out our review from last years festival part 1 and part part 2!

Often a Scouse-centric line up as per tradition allows the participants and pleasure seekers the opportunity to celebrate the successes and sounds which continue to grow in England’s favourite musical city. You’ll also find plenty of visiting bands on the line up too – need we even mention the headliners? OK then, Juliette & The Licks! (Say Whhaaatt!). This year though the event has been forced to move beyond it’s previous home of  the, now horrifically flattened, Kazimier. Evol had no difficulty in finding a new abode in the creative warehouse spaces of Camp And Furnace, Blade Factory and District, all within the city’s Baltic Triangle area.  Don’t worry though the new location is perfectly situated with several venues being linked within the same building or only a stones throw away, so you can easily keep on track of your must see band list.

Talking of that must see band list, the following task is decidedly dicey for us. What with SO many of our much loved new bands featuring on the line up –  how exactly to tell you who our picks are? Well we’ve put together a bit of a  Spotify playlist for one and then Gary and I have just totally gone on a pick n mix of bands here – just to give you some flavour of where you might be able to hunt us down on Sunday.

Feral Love

Liverpool’s duo Feral Love are wondering around looking all cool as cucumbers, as though nothing’s gong on. It is, but they seem un fazed, even when Clash picks up their debut single, Like The Wind, for a premiere. Unassuming vocals dance like glittering dust partials trapped in a prism of light across minimalist electronica which builds and builds into a hearty alt-pop track. I’ve yet to see them live so they have become a must see in my FestEVOL schedule.

Venus Demilo

A FestEVOL debut for local lads Venus Demilo who have the almost daunting task of opening up one of the festival stages this year. If their sonically soaring sounds that sing freely from their current single Sinking Ships is anything to go by though they will pull in a decent crowd who will looking to get in on early with these guys.

ZUZU

Events like Festevol are not all about sweaty rock music though as Zuzu is going to prove to you.  One of the surprise highlights of last year’s event, it is exciting to see what another year of honing her craft is going to do to this young lady.  With a web of effortless power pop being spun every time she plays guitar, I cannot wait for this set.  This is going to be an early evening treat for those who want sunshine in their ears as well as in the skies.

YEAR OF THE FIERY HORSE

If the likes of Hooton Tennis Club and Parquet Courts are up your street, I would recommend you finish your Sunday roast dinner early and get yourself to Camp for 14:30 to watch Year of The Fiery Horse. With multiple vocalists, awkward angular beats and evocative titles such as Midnight at Montmatre and, if you’re lucky, some witty on-stage patter the set is going to fly by. It is going to set the tone for one of the best days of your life. Popped Pinky Promise!
