Just Listen: White – Recreational TV

White

Words: Gary Feeney

whiteAnother week, another great new single from White…well, almost. It’s not quite a weekly occurrence, but coming hot on the heels of I Liked You Better When You Needed Me and Step Up, new releases from the quintet are coming thick and fast, a state of affairs that we could very easily get used to.

With a vocal ensemble featuring a myriad of fellow Glaswegians such as Baby Strange, the Lapelles and Lucia Fontaine and a backing track sounding like it could have featured on the soundtrack to Scarface, Recreational TV is an ominous, brooding affair. Distinctly darker than their previous releases, it isn’t as immediately engaging as the likes of Living Fiction, but then, that seems to be the point of choosing a single like this: it’s a song which challenges the listener and challenges any preconceptions anyone might have had of the band.

It might take a few listens to really get to grips with Recreational TV, but good things come to those who wait – it’s one of White’s most impressive releases to date.
