Playlist Winner Q&A: Tiggi Hawke

Tiggi Hawke

Playlist 008 Winner

For those who haven’t got to grips with you yet – please introduce yourself:

Aloha! I’m Tiggi Hawke, I’m from London and based at Tileyard Studios. I trained classically and made the transition to electro-pop when I was about 15 when I started writing music for myself and other artists. Since then, I released an EP last year and I just released my latest single in February called Neon Dancer!

How and why did you decide to start a band/ solo music project?

One of the main reasons I transitioned away from the classical side of things was that I wanted to express myself more and music was really the only way I knew how. So I started writing pop music and about 4 or 5 years later I felt that I was in a good place to start working on my solo career. That was about 2 years ago now and I’m loving it!

What do you see as being your biggest challenges ahead as a solo artist?

For me, my biggest challenge is myself… I know that sounds ridiculous but I’ve been learning to let go a little bit! I’m a perfectionist, which I don’t think is a bad thing, but it does mean that you always think it could be done a bit better, especially gigs! So just taking a step back every now and again and trusting other people is my challenge for this year. I’m writing continuously which I love and so hopefully there will be more releases soon!

What have been your highlights as a band so far?

Having people actually hear my music is such a big deal to me! I recently went over 100,000 views on youtube (which is a personal best!) and I’ve only played it 99,000 times, so that means at least a few other people are listening! Jokes aside, its been been a huge highlight for me so far

Are there any new bands/musicians you love who you think everyone else should be checking out now too? – Please let us know who!

I just started listening to Hayley Kiyoko and I love her new track! It’s called Sleepovers and you should definitely check it out. You’re welcome!

What do you do to ease the boredom of long journeys for gigs?

Games… I wish I could read but I get travel sick if I read for too long! So I end up playing games on my phone or just falling asleep. I can fall asleep pretty much anywhere!! I like to think its a talent but I reckon my band probably wouldn’t agree, they’re the ones who have to wake me up!

What are your pre-show rituals?

I like to calm down before a gig so if I’m getting a bit nervous, I sit down and do a quick 10 minute meditation just to re-centre. Which actually sounds super holistic! At the same time, I have to wear my grandma’s rings that she gave to me, they just give me a confidence boost before I go on stage. I’m very superstitious so there’s always going to be a little ritual before gigs!

Where can we find you next for gigs?

I’ll be gigging London for the next few months! I always post them on my Facebook and Instagram so keep an eye out!

Please give us three songs to add to our hope playlist:
Here goes!

Thundercat – Friend Zone

R I T U A L – Exit

BXRBER – Worship
Question from last playlist poll winners (Kassassin St):
Would you rather be a squirrel with wheels for eyes or an onion with no self awareness?

A squirrel. Hands down. Imagine how fluffy my tail would be! Plus I could face wheel around the park and I’m pretty sure people would give me peanuts for that.
