Just Listen: Cosmo Sheldrake – Wriggle
Cosmo Sheldrake
Words: Nick Jacques
With a name that wouldn’t sound out of place in a Douglas Adams Novel, the same thing could be said about his music too. Wriggle is the first single off Cosmo’s anticipated debut album The Much Much How How and I. Sheldrake’s music with its whimsical charm and looped arrangements brings something different to the musical pallet. It’s a breath of fresh air amongst the indie-rock masses. Imagine the sounds of Alt J and Syd Barrett fused together with a sprinkling of Penguin Café Orchestra on top and you will have an idea of what sort of mechanics are at work here.
The multi-instrumentalist, despite being relatively young at 27, plays with the maturity of a fine matured musician. To see him live would be a treat as he can play no less than 30 instruments!
Sheldrake first came to our attention back in 2014 with the Guardian peppering him with encouraging compliments for the many endeavours he pursues; from spearheading a community choir, running beatbox workshops to conducting music for Samuel Beckett plays, his interests go further than just conducting his own pieces. 4 years later we now get to see what he has managed to create and cast upon his musical canvass.
The craft of his music is exemplary and will have you wanting to brush the dust off that bassoon and giving it a good big blow!
