SXSW With: Breakfast Muff

Breakfast Muff

Words and Photos: Elena Katrina

I’ll be honest… I’ve never seen Breakfast Muff play live before, I don’t even know, truthfully still, if I’ve sat down and listened to them before now. I’ve seen their name on posters and I’ve heard them being talked about so I figured, when is best to get to know a bit more about a band than when you find yourself invited along to chat to them. Right?? So hold tight, here we go… SXSW with Breakfast Muff.

What brought you over to SXSW this year?

CAL: I guess we came because we got asked to come and we got funding to.

EILIDH: Yeah we got funding from the PRS and also it’s nice to meet people and stuff but also we just like playing shows so we’re just playing shows and I’m going to see loads of other shows and that’s amazing.

CAL: It’s kind of going to a festival for free.

For people who haven’t been introduced to Breakfast Muff yet what have you been doing back home in the UK before you got to be here?

EILIDH: We’ve been together for three years and put out three records

SIMOM: one proper album

EILIDH: two really short albums and then the one last year was like a full proper album

SIMOM: Playing lots of gigs in Glasgow and touring the UK. Last year we did a European Tour. Just doing what’s what.

What are you looking forward to most at SXSW, aside from your own shows?

EILIDH: I really want to see Princess Nokia but I don’t know if we’ll get in as we don’t have a pass but I’m hoping.

CAL: Probably, I was looking forward to seeing The Wedding Present the most but I saw them last night!

SIMOM: Princess Nokia too.

And post SXSW, what’s the Breakfast Muff plan?

EILIDH: We’re releasing an EP next month and then we’re writing a new album just now. Writing, recording, more shows maybe try and come back to the US to do a proper tour if that can happen.

SIMOM: Fake it til you make it.
