EP Review: Tom Branfoot – Bloodsongs
Bloodsongs
Words Samantha Sadler
One of the best things about listening to new music every day is when you stumble across something that you totally don’t expect and that’s exactly what I got from Leeds heartthrob Tom Branfoot.
Branfoot’s new EP Bloodsongs sets a bleak landscape that is glittered with phenomenal vocals and twirling instrumentals that I promise is going to leave you in absolute awe.
Opening with Post London Blues, exposed riffs echo around Branfoot’s gruff snarl as he delves into the frustration of waiting for a bus, insisting that “can’t wait anymore.” Intensifying synths weave around funky percussion patterns, with electro vibes creeping in as the dissatisfaction of Branfoot’s experience escalates.
Second track I Could Make You Mine opens with a delicate piano and as the reverb-laden instrumental builds, Branfoot croons lovingly “I could make you mine, if you weren’t too far from home.” Continuing in the same vein, Crucified offers reverb-soaked riffs and dramatic percussions that run into a fierce explosion of throaty, hardcore punk-style vocals.
One that we can all relate to, Hungover, Heartbroken opens with some kind of Grease-style instrumental before Branfoot swoons with a romantic slur of his husky voice. The lovesick soundscape half reminds me of watching Sandy by the paddling pool singing ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ and I love it.
Closing the EP is the theatrical Neither Of Us Have Anything with eerie soaring keys as Branfoot barks “I was wasted on you.”
One for fans of Nick Cave and Gabriel Bruce this is an absolute musical masterpiece. I need to see this guy live immediately.
