Just Listen: Saint Agnes – Welcome to Silvertown

Saint Agnes – Welcome to Silvertown

Words & Photography: Gary Lambert

It is in my self-inflated opinion that Saint Agnes are the most exciting, edgy, dirty rock’n’roll band in the UK at this moment in time. And the good news is that the release of the title track of their newly announced debut album (due May) only boosts that opinion.

An ode to the band’s base of Silvertown, an industrial part of east London known for a sugar factory, this has all the hallmarks of ‘The Death and Glory Gang’ EP but sounds like it was written and arranged by Jack White. It has the remarkable characteristic of feeling like it was made to be played in a grungy basement, but designed to sound like it comes from a stage where the sky is the ceiling. I can honestly say I love this single.
