This has the potential to be the start of a beautiful friendship. Cro Cro Land is a new indie-rock festival being held in the heart of Croydon on 6th April and has a tantalising line-up to boot! With early bird tickets sold out – and with this year being its maiden voyage, it’s time to set the bearings to off the map!
Being staged in Croydon, a big town currently going through a fundamental transition, is not traditionally renowned for staging festivals like this but in recent years this could not be further from the truth. Rock, metal and grime music festivals have all been popping up regularly and this is showing Croydon to be in a different and more enterprising light. The future is looking bright!
There will be well established bands like Blood Red Shoes and The Lovely Eggs headlining the show. It promises to be a memorable festival for all especially as they will want to make the first Cro Cro Land a special one! To make sure this is a certainty, there is so much talent gracing the festival, with bands who have been clocking up more followers on social media than those signing up to the EU Remain petition! (Well, maybe not as many but you get the drift) Moses, Sisteray, Nova Twins and Bang Bang Romeo amongst others on the bill have all been accumulating a lot of hype and as a result are helping to shape the current music landscape. It only serves to build the anticipation even more!
Organisers will be looking to make sure that the festival goes off without a hitch and everyone gets to see the bands they come to watch and create a friendly ruckus! As ever, there are far too many good bands to all watch at the same time and there will be inevitable clashes – but has there ever been a festival where you haven’t been torn between who to see? Yeah, didn’t think so!
As always Popped offers their tips to beat the perspective clashes below with links to the bands for the festival and some of Popped’s favourites will also be making appearances such as….
Sisteray
These guys pump out big anthemic indie rock with a socio-political flavour. They also stage their own “guerrilla-style” DJ/gig shows too, called “Welcome To The Monkey House” where they arrange all the bands and promote it themselves! If these guys aren’t dedicated to their cause then I don’t know who is!
Berries
The 3-piece have been making waves across these isles for quite a while now! Having played their own Popped Headline show, they continue to grow in stature and confidence and will no doubt have Cro Cro Land in a spin with their brand of rock executed in astute fashion.
Nova Twins
Although this fearsome duo haven’t featured on Popped before, they will surely be one of the main pulls at Cro Cro Land. With a strong love for Betty Davis, Jack White and N.E.R.D, expect an assault on the senses with their incisive and compelling vocals combined with a heavy dose of razor-sharp dirty rock/funk.
She Drew The Gun
Since I reviewed their debut album back 2016, SDTG have steadily risen and developed a strong following of admirers in high places, most notably on BBC6 music who have championed them in recent times and that admiration has taken them to higher places. They are sure to be another highlight of the festival!
Scarlet
Scarlet have been favourites of Popped for a while now. Their alluring and highly addictive brand of infectious punk/pop melodies will have you begging for more! They have been on tour with a very varied selection of artists; from the likes of Bob Geldof & the Boomtown Rats to Black Honey!
Bang Bang Romeo
Imagine the vocal dynamics of Adele backed by bombastic indie funk ingredients and you’ve got yourself a lively hell of a punch on your hands! BBR are destined for the big time with their big sound. The crowd will not know what’s hit them!
