EP Review: The Academic – Acting My Age
The Academic
Acting My Age
Words by Amy Butcher
Irish four-piece The Academic have been on my radar ever since I first heard Bear Claws from their debut album Tales From The Backseat and I can’t get enough! What’s so great about this band is how they create songs you can not only relate to, but sing along to as well. And there is just something about the hooks that get stuck in your head for days. Over the last couple of years they’ve played with some big names like The Rolling Stones as well as becoming a prominent presence during festival season. This compiled with their addictive sound makes them a band to keep your eyes on.
Their latest EP Acting My Age solidifies their position in the indiesphere and showcases their ability to develop fresh exciting sounds. Anything Can Happen opens the EP with aeuphoric 80s feel and it’s the type of song you can envisage spurring a crowd to go crazy when played live. The title track Acting My Age uses jangly guitar melodies and twinkly synths to help bolden the lyrics reflecting on how we can learn and grow from mistakes we’ve made.
What I love about this EP is it shows the range The Academic have in their songwriting, especially when you get to Happy Hour which contains less synth and more of a rough edgy sound, whilst still perfectly fitting into the overall vibes of the EP. Closing on a slower note, Them uses soft melodies and singer Craig Fitzgerald’s soulful vocals to produce a heavier tone compared to the more lighthearted start.
As you can probably tell I’m a big fan of, and Acting My Age has made me love their music even more. If you haven’t listened to them before, I implore you to!
