Just Listen: Yonaka – Give Me My Halo

Yonaka – Give Me My Halo
Words: Elena Katrina

It feels like Yonaka have somehow provided the soundtrack to my life over the last 7 years or so. If I’m honest, now with two babies under 3 at home, I wouldn’t give up my sleep for just any band to listen to their latest release and sit in the dark to write about it.

Give Me My Halo” is a blissful, almost cinematic, piece of slow rock perfection. Most might be used to hearing Theresa burst into powerful and energetic song, hitting you right between the eyes, delivering her message right to the point, full of angst and fight. “Give Me My Halo” is somewhat more serene and showcases a pure tone – one that those who follow their socials will have become accustomed to hearing.

Taking a lead from their slower track “Anthem” with Barnes Courtney, it’s still emotional but my god do I want to see and hear “Give Me My Halo” live with a string quartet – I think it would bring me to tears. The track builds but it’s delicate, a slower pace with spaces to concentrate on vocals that are often sat just in front of an undulating piano. There’s no sudden explosion of energetic guitars here, it’s measured and because of that it pulls you in closer. Yonaka prove, yet again, that they aren’t your bog-standard punk rock act, they are so much more and most definitely worth making time for.
