Just Listen: Gen and The Degenerates- Big Hit Single

Gen and The Degenerates – Big Hit Single
Words: Elena Katrina

Signed to Marshall Records, Gen and The Degenerates return with their latest offering, “Big Hit Single“. Keeping to their punk rock roots the bass and drums are heavy, pounding and as expected steering you toward a loud clashing chorus. Then there is Gen, she shouts her demands, her requests and well, in this case, I suppose fewer demands and more made-up “facts”.

Big Hit Single” has huge dollops of tongue and cheek lyrically and much less of the band’s usual political content. “This song is what love feels like” is one of my favourite lyrics because in a long list of what this song “is” maybe this one might, just might, hit the nail on the head. Also, I urge you to not just listen to learn the words to sing along (you will want to sing along!) but listen to the articulation, it just drips of sarcasm, and you can just hear eye-rolling and that my friend, is one of the best things about “Big Hit Single“.

There isn’t a lack of intelligence despite the gigantic silliness of this song. Referencing the age-old philosophical concept of “if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound”. I’m fairly sure I did an entire module on just this for my music degree. It’s such an unexpected take on it that the first time I heard the lyric I laughed out loud – in front of the band (they were playing it live, it’s OK they won’t have seen me cackling). It’s humorous on many layers but it’s the phrasing and the unexpectedness of it that’s what got me. It was unexpected, yet somehow now I think about it, not something that doesn’t make entire sense for Gen to use.

I hope “Big Hit Single” delivers Gen and The Degenerates just that, a big hit. It’s smart, humorous, and catchy. Basically, it’s got all the right ingredients in all of the right places – if you ask me anyhoo. I’m looking forward to hearing much more of this newfound “silliness” from them. Is anyone else now wondering what the Big Hit Album is going to sound like?
