Just Listen: White – Step Up

White

Words: Gary Feeney

whiteFollowing the joyous disco-pop of their last single Fight The Feeling, White’s latest offering, Step Up, is a shock to the senses. Built around a pulsating electronic beat, which, sounds more complex the more you listen to it, there’s a distinctly dark and menacing edge to the track: not just because it features the brilliant line “step up and kill your friends” (which, admittedly, would do the job on its own), but the effect of Leo Condie whispering, speaking and snarling his way through his vocals. It is rather unsettling and adds even more depth to the dark musical power behind him. It’s a very different style and vibe from their previous releases, but that very change in direction is what makes Step Up such a thrilling, visceral single and also what makes White such a vital band.
