Cinema
Playlist 004 Winner
For those who haven’t got to grips with you yet – please introduce yourselves:
We are Cinema, an alternative electronic pop band from Birmingham.
We have been labelled as anything from tropical pop to electro soul.
We are forever writing songs and love throwing in new percussion and world instruments.
How did you all meet and what is it you saw in each other to decide to start a band?
A couple of us go way back and met through school.. The other half were writing partners and band mates through our degrees in pop music and music tech. The thing that tied it together was a love of electro soundscapes and pop structures.
What do you see as being your biggest challenges ahead as a band?
The biggest challenge for Cinema is producing the perfect single… We know it’s impossible but we have a lot of fun trying. I think we have the same challenge as a lot of bands in trusting our instincts.. We probably reverse engineer out the odd drop of magic from a demo to often. I think the next single will have a lot more grit and low-fi elements.
What have been your highlights as a band so far?
Recording a little live video for Vevo was a lot of fun.. Especially salvaging props from the roof of a well known retail establishment. I would say the gig with Sundara Karma was up there with our best, we are big fans. We got a complimentary ride on the Brighton pier after fish, chips and a bottle of wine during The Great Escape.. That was a ropey highlight. I think the best is still yet to come though.
Are there any new bands you love who you think everyone else should be checking out now too? – Please let us know who!
I think I am late to the party with Clean Cut Kid.. But they write pretty songs. I have had ‘Jean’ on repeat for about a month. I am excited to hear the next single from our Brummie brothers Juice. We had a sneaky listen to the stems and it sounds great. Barely needs a mix.
What do you do to ease the boredom of long journeys for gigs?Hmm we don’t have much in the way of games.. But I would recommend a couple of albums that we turn to on long drives.
Numero one – David Fanshaw – African Sanctus
Numero two – The Legend of Zelda – 25th anniversary Soundtrack
What are your pre-show rituals?
We loosen up with “Sugar in the morning, ding ding!” If you don’t know it google it….
Where can we find you next for gigs?
20th October at the o2 institute in Birmingham supporting the Sunshine Underground.
Please give us three songs to add to our heartbreak playlist:
Crown of Love – Arcade Fire
If You Leave – OMD
Every Breath You Take – The Police
Question from Twin Pines (last winners): any strange rider requests?
We have a lot in common with the Stones, so a special room for our traveling snooker table. We would give Ronnie a run for his money…Ronnie Wood that is.
