Just Listen: Kidsmoke – Waves

Kidsmoke

Words: Gary Feeney

kidsmokeHaving spent the last few years honing their sound with a stream of relatively low-key releases which gained them festival and radio attention in their native Wales, the latest release from Kidsmoke looks set to expose the quartet to an even wider audience.

A slow-burner, Waves, opens with a lone acoustic guitar accompanying a tender vocal from frontman Lance William which harmonises beautifully with guitarist Sophie Ballamy’s backing vocals, before being joined by the rhythm section of James Stickels (bass) and Ash Turner (drums); from then on, the song proceeds to build in intensity, especially in the choruses which veer teasingly close to grandiosity, perfectly complementing the bittersweet lyrics.

An enchanting track of melodic charm, power and beauty, Waves is likely to be many people’s first encounter with Kidsmoke, and almost certainly won’t be their last.
