Just Listen: Lucia – Saturday is Dead

Words: Gary Feeney

luciaSince appearing on these pages a few months ago, Lucia Fontaine has rebranded herself simply as LUCIA and has marked the switch with the storming Saturday Is Dead the first release under her new moniker. Featuring the enigmatic Roxy Agogo (or Hamish Fingland, to give him his proper), the White guitarist’s contribution is noticeable for more than just his distinctive guitar lines – the intense, driving backing track has echoes of Roxy’s main band (Step Up in particular) which fuses magically with LUCIA’s own, dreamier sensibilities, and by the time it reaches the climax of “Saturday’s dead, f*ck up we’re having fun”, Saturday Is Dead stakes an early claim to a place on end-of-year singles lists.

LUCIA’s name may have shortened, but it’s sure to become an awful lot bigger on this form.
