Just Listen: Marsicans – Wake Up Freya

Masicans

Words: Joe Cockburn

Marsicans have hit our ears once more with a fresh tune in time for their headline tour next month, but this one is different.

The Leeds quartet have had us falling head over heels for their upbeat, indie pop with a grungey twist, but new single Wake Up Freya is way more personal and emotional, written for lead singer James’ unborn niece, telling her to try and forget about all the bad in the world and focus on the good.

The group’s trademark riffs and hooks aren’t forgotten though, as after a slow and deep beginning, the song builds and reaches a rapid crescendo with drums and guitars a-plenty.

It’s something different from the loveable Marsicans, who recently performed an outstanding session at Maida Vale for BBC Radio One, showing their progressive maturity and incredible musical talent.
