Just Listen: KOYO – Jettisoned

KOYO

Words: Samantha Sadler

I was lucky enough to catch KOYO at Live at Leeds earlier this month and I’ve had my eye on them ever since. As a big Radiohead fan these are right up my street, combining progressive-rock with experimental electronic vibes.

Latest single Jettisoned explores “themes of rejection and paranoia” according to the Leeds five-piece. Boasting a stunning soundscape, dreamy vocals and eerie, psychedelic riffs zigzag around murky percussions and wacky synths.

There’s a lot going on in this track, it’s dark yet the instrumental shines with optimism and it’s like you’re being told a story rather than listening to just a song. Huw Edwards’ foggy vocals skim over the instrumental as he pleads and earnestly yells “jettisoned, oh such a pretty day”, as space-age loops rain down.

With understated grimey guitars and an impressive lengthy outro, this is the 2018 answer to decent prog-rock.
