Just Listen: The Kairos – Teetotal
The Kairos
Teetotal
Words by Gary Lambert
In a passive aggressive world there are few things more politely damning of a band or a tune than when you say “well they sound a bit Oasis”. However, when I text someone to say “it sounds like an Oasis B-side circa 1994-97” then it’s a completely different matter. I’m struggling to find a better era in my musical taste.
Teetotal by Liverpool’s The Kairos is one such tune. From start to finish Teetotal has an exciting swagger created by a wall of powerful guitar that runs throughout, but it isn’t the guitar which first drags your ear to the speaker. I don’t know what the combination of instruments is, but it sounds like piano and saxophone (my least loved instrument) melding into a siren to warn you of impending doom.
The siren screech re-appears in the track but by that stage the stomping, roaring verse has worked its magic and you’re deep into Teetotal. The Kairos are a confident unit too, as you can tell by the fact that the chorus to this release is as subtle as you can get with whirling guitars, sneering vocals, and an industrial-powered rhythm section.
I think you’re going to be hearing a lot of The Kairos during 2020 if this is anything to go by.
