Future

Words by Gary Lambert

Manchester’s Saytr Play are one of those acts who never seem to make a mis-step.  Whether it is their breathless, dramatic live show or indie bop after indie bop they release, it’s all bang on target.  Latest track Future is no exception.

Reminding me of Brett Anderson’s vocal on Suede’s expansive and aptly-named New Generation, Future is opened and propelled by Fred Farrell’s theatrical-indie singing performance.  The bright darkness as he sings “running around as the bombs hit the ground” confuses me as I feel joyous and saddened by the juxtaposition.

All of this is played to a backdrop of stadium filling guitar whilst fills the mind with images of bright lights and pyrotechnics in a Proustian reaction.  Without being over-the-top or pulling in a gospel choir or orchestra, Future gives off the feeling of being an ambitious and progressive single from a band who are naturally finding that they have few boundaries.
