Just Listen: Girl In Red – Serotonin

Girl In Red

Serotonin

Words: Amy Butcher

When you first listen to ‘Serotonin’ by Girl In Red a.k.a. Marie Ulven, it’s clear her sound has
developed in a fantastic way this year and with the announcement of her debut album ‘If I Could Make It Go Quiet’, it’s going to be an exciting year for the Norwegian singer-songwriter.

Seratonin
starts almost like a pop-rock song with intricate electric guitar melodies, before the familiar synth and electronic beats hit your eardrums as Ulven’s vocals begin the first
verse/bridge ‘I get intrusive thoughts like cutting my hands off, Like jumping in front of a bus,
Like how do I make this stop’.

The contrast between lyrics and production creates an interesting perspective of someone
processing their intrusive thoughts. Lyrically this song is raw, emotional and somewhat self
confessional about the various thoughts going through her head, yet you’re given a panicked
high energy in the melodies. Whether it’s the loud brash drum beats or the subtle anxiousness in Ulven’s voice, you’re taken on a rollercoaster of emotions when listening to this track.
