Just Listen: Raffer – The Media
Raffer – The Media
Words: Daniel Burton
RAFFER (aka Callum Rafferty), a DIY artist hailing from the countrysides of Kent, is slowly emerging into the limelight as a huge prospect in the Indie-Pop world. Releasing his first single, ‘Together’, a little over a year ago, he subsequently produced and released 3 more tracks during 2018.
The latest addition to the RAFFER collection is ‘The Media‘, which is arguably his best music to date. If you combine a toned-down rock sound from Clean Cut Kid and the genius lyrical style from Sam Fender, you get the sound of RAFFER. Whilst maintaining this typical indie-pop sound from previous songs, the latest release has more of a light rock sound in the guitar, which just adds another element to his already complex sound. It is all of this that helps him create a huge sound that sticks in your head forever. I loved this song the moment it hit my ears, but the more and more I listened to it, the more I seem to get hooked.
‘The Media’ is a truly powerful song, both lyrically and in sound. With links to the falsehoods and misleading nature of today’s media, it truly epitomises the culture of the world we live in today. The opening synth and keyboard sound builds up to an explosion of sound as the guitar kicks in, and from this moment you know something special is about to happen, and the rest of the song doesn’t disappoint.
This self-produced track is so complex with so many layers, you will hear a million different elements upon every listening. This is further testament to his talent, not just writing songs as an artist, but also as an unbelievable producer.
With this in mind, it is very easy to see RAFFER’s sound and popularity maturing along a similar path to the likes of Blossoms. Alongside this, with clear links to the sounds of The 1975 & Sundara Karma in his music already, the rejuvenation of such indie-pop bands back into the mainstream, and this track being the first single from the self-titled EP due out this year, it is certainly a positive outlook for the future of RAFFER.
