Just Listen: Chappaqua Wrestling – Football
Chappaqua Wrestling
Football
Words by Jim Mumby
By honing their musical prowess, the guitar-focussed indie-rock soundscapes of recent times are a far departure from what I felt was flat-sounding four-track EP1. It seems Chappaqua Wrestling have managed to shake off any influential contagions, to emerge unscathed and invigorated with a much more professional and richer sound of their own, as recorded on their latest single Football.
A sombre recollection and exposé of the cognitive experiences of best friends and writers Charlie Woods and Jake Mac’s lacklustre teen years, the disappointment of friendship groups and the dispiriting conventions of social displacement, in a song written to be worthy perhaps as a melodious exorcism of those demon days.
Due to Football being lyrically sparse, Chappaqua Wrestling are able to avoid all the flagrant misery of a thousand shoegaze anthems, the magnification focuses on the propulsive charge of the dependable drumming and driving guitars which swell to distorted appeal throughout an instrumental interlude, before reconnecting with the straining vocals which echo the overtones of a deflated and saddened generation.
Despite Football‘s bleakness and the comparative shortness, the rewards are thought-provoking and enduring.
